Building The Ascent

As I was leaving the garage today, I noticed that the construction workers were about to place one of the large exterior panels on the peak of The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge. The Ascent is a high-rise condominium tower with a unique spiraling, slanted design by Daniel Libeskind.

Near the Roebling Suspension Bridge, according to the building's info page it will be the tallest owner-occupied residential building in both the State of Kentucky and the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Area when completed later this year. Just one of the new developments on the Northern Kentucky skyline - they're getting ready to give Cincinnati a run for their money.
That's a long way up in the air; pretty cool seeing these guys place this panel like it's no big deal & that they aren't just one misstep away from game over!

another 20 or so more buildings that are at least 10 stories high and then...Nky might be getting there. Nky is making splashes in the water, and no area in the midwest is capable of the building boom that it would take for Nky to give Cincinnati a "run for it's money."

That's a very fair point & I admit to taking a bit of editorial liberties with my commentary. :)

Still, a lot of those tall buildings are currently semi or mostly vacant [note that this is an unsubstantiated statement from a friend of mine who works downtown]. You've also got to give credit to NKY for getting stuff done while Cincy is *still* arguing about the Banks.

I'm a big supporter of what Cincinnati is doing to revitalize its downtown - a little friendly competition between the neighboring coasts could only help things along.

"A run for their money"

^ Are you serious? It is a beautiful photo and Ascent will add to the bland skyline of Covington but you can add another 25 buildings and Covington still wouldn't be giving Cincinnati a run for their money.

To compare the Banks to a condo project is a little naive. For the Banks to take off there needs to be $50 million dollars in parking garages built to take it out of a flood plain before anything can be built. Friendly competition is one thing but to paint certain projects with a broad brush will only make you look silly.

Aren't the Edgecliff Condominiums something like 24 or 26 stories?

Kevin - that comment is based on the building info page; I've clarified that.

Anon - Thanks for the compliment on the photo. Regarding the Banks: I am not equating the two projects - I'm commenting on NKY's recent push for new development that seems to be progressing very quickly vs. a downtown Cinti project that has been delayed time and time again. Banks is a major effort, but is it the $50m in parking or the politics that's standing in the way of its complet... er, commencement?

I talk up the OTR revitalization and the Fountain Square improvements all the time, so I'm not down on the city. I'm just calling a Spade a Spade - take a poll of Cincinnatians on what the think of the Banks and I'll bet the majority refer to it as "a mess". I'd love to be proven wrong on that, but when I look out the window today I'm guessing that I won't see any construction crews down there.

I appreciate folks taking the time to read and reply. Thanks for stopping by!
