Wouldn't you know it, just before I'm trying to go to bed I see that Adobe has released the 1.1 version of Lightroom! It is currently upgrading my catalog, which I presume is their new name for the database...
IMPORTANT: If you have a large library, expect to not see anything for quite a while after the "updating catalog" dialog disappears. Just go make some coffee & leave it be!! The process needs a lot of system resources (see below), by the way, so go ahead and shut down your browser, etc. before you proceed.
I caught wind of the release via a thread on the Flickr Lightroom discussion board; it lists out some helpful links & I'll repeat a few here:
- Lightroom main site
- Lightroom 1.1 README File (PDF)
- Detailed article from Martin Evening
- Another detailed article
My database took around 20 minutes to update on my new photo workstation and another 10 or so for the initial load - must be some pretty heavy lifting going on! My library currently weighs in around 400MB with around 30k images loaded.
Hm... a lot of disk grinding involved & finally the window slowly comes up - check out the memory usage (and this is *after* Lightroom is fully loaded)!
Granted that this is a 2GB system, but for any app to take up 1GB is pretty gutsy... this is a fairly high-end computer & was more or less run into the ground. Fortunately it seems that future sessions with Lightroom don't use anywhere near this much memory, as restarting it brought it back down into some reasonable levels.Anyway, enough for now - time to try out this new update. Will post my thoughts on the update later on.
Do you back up your docs & photos? I
