Recommended Photography Podcasts

There are thousands of podcasts out there these days and many of them are about photography in some way, shape, or form. Here are a few that I've been listening to lately...

On the Creative Process:

  • Lenswork - Brooks Jensen, publisher of LensWork magazine shares his random thoughts on photographic art, printing, and the creative process. The magazine, by the way, is excellent if a bit expensive.
  • Camera Position - Jeff Curto presents topics on the visual and creative process of photography, specifically staying away from technical discussion. I'm a new listener of this show, but it has promise.
  • Martin Bailey Photography - Takes you on a tour of recent shoots and discusses the making of each. Typically a very interesting show and Martin's work is outstanding.
Photoshop and Lightroom:
  • The Radiant Vista - Craig Tanner and Mark Johnson have created a great community on their website - I've been checking out their forums more frequently. These guys produce a *lot* of content! Besides an audio podcast, they offer three video podcasts:
    • The Daily Critique - a daily segment where a single photograph is discussed for its qualities and potential areas of improvement (sometimes in camera, other times in post).
    • The Photoshop Workbench - a weekly (or so) extended post processing session where a photograph is worked in Photoshop and is taken from good (sometimes bad) to great. The computer is the new darkroom & the darkroom is where prints are made...
    • Video Tutorials - Just as the title suggests, these are 20-30 minute sessions discussing a specific topic, such as the new features in Photoshop or the additions to Lightroom 1.1.
  • NAPP TV - Formerly known as Photoshop TV, this is a weekly show hosted by Scott Kelby & his friends Matt Kloskowski and Dave Cross. Each week they give some quick tips and short tutorials on Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator. The show has come a long way since episode 1 & is one of the best produced video podcasts I've seen. That said, production costs money & you'll have to put up with an ad or two.
  • PhotoWalkthrough - Another video podcast showing the post processing work done to a single photograph each episode. This show is new to me; hopefully it'll be as good as the Radiant Vista.
Tips, etc:
  • LightSource - Bill and Ed have recently begun adding video to some of their recent podcasts. Very cool since a lot of this stuff is easier to see than it is to describe! The only major downside to these guys is that they are big supporters of the microstock sites like IStockPhoto. I don't listen to every episode as I feel that sometimes they run a little long, but the new video offerings could breathe some new life into it.
  • Tips From the Top Floor - Chris Marquardt presents frequent episodes in both audio and video format. His topics are mostly focused on digital photography and skewed toward a more basic audience. I stopped listening a while back, but now that I see that he's added some video I'll check in to see how things have evolved.

I like listening to Tips From the Top Floor, an english podcast by a German speaker. Informative and fun. Some video podcasts for demonstrations, too.

Someone on a forum sent me this podcast link... looks promising, but I haven't listened as of yet.

I'm actually going to a TFTTF workshop in CO in September. Otherwise I've been listening/watching Photowalkthrough, The Candid Frame at thecandidframe.com (interviews with photographers), and the Focus Ring which is kind of a round table of people from the Photocast network. I'm not sure what their webpage is since I got tipped off to it from any of the above people because they're usually on it and Chris usually seems to go into some deeper stuff on that one when they decide to do it. I got it through iTunes.

You missed one of the best... The Digital Photography show is a great show that includes discussions and interviews about a wide range of photography related topics. These guys are just real people that talk about photography. They get some amazing guests and present everything in an easy to listen to format.
