** Hopefully this will mark the end of my recently frequent PC-hardware posts, since it's not really the focus of this blog. That said, I am going through all of this trouble just to edit my photos... -RRD
Well, it's been an interesting ride with my Photoshop Workstation, but I think I've finally got this thing humming along where I want it. I recently discovered the true solution to Windows Vista and Photoshop CS3 performance problems: Go back to Windows XP!!
Even on a fast computer, XP performance - especially when it comes to Photoshop - is much faster than Vista. Period. End of story.
I also discovered that there was a problem with my video card which was causing some freezing issues. Serves me right for shopping the open-box returns section of Microcenter... I exchanged it today for a Diamond Stealth x1550 board, which is based on the ATI Radeon Crossfire chip. Why do graphics cards have such goofy names?
The last thing I'm working with at the moment is where to set the clock speed. Sure, the chip is rated at 2.4GHz, but people are pretty regularly getting the CPU to run around 3.6GHz. Granted, that's often with some higher-end cooling, but a lot of good overclocking can be had with just the stock heatsink/fan. It's all about finding the sweet spot where the system is completely stable.
Oh - and Lightroom 1.1 is blazing fast on this new setup!
